(Don't worry if you make a mistake.

Xbox 360 says NAT type is set to strict (or moderate)
  • We bought this AirPort Express to piggy back off of our AirPort Time Capsule & Base Station for our house and we absolutely love it! Its helpful for us because we have two Nest cameras (one for the front of the house and the 2nd one to cover the backyard) that wasn't really responding to the AirPort Time Capsule by itself because its a 4500 sq ft home.
  • Apple's Airport Extreme has WMM on by default, and you can't turn it off. Linksys, on the other hand, gives you the ability to adjust WMM settings. QoS (Quality of Service) does the same thing but.

If you cannot join online games or hear other players in games or chat, you might have a Network Address Translation (NAT) problem. If you have a NAT problem, you will see a NAT warning icon or error when you test your Xbox LIVE connection.

NOTE: If this User Name and Password doesn't work, you may also try the following:
    User Name: root Password: central
    User Name: root Password: 12345
    User Name: support Password: support

  3. Enter the NAT -- Port Triggering Setup
Once logged in to the Comtrend router, click on Advanced Setup on the left side of the screen. Then click on NAT and then click on Port Triggering. Finally click on Add to begin setting up the Port Triggering.

To set up Port Forwarding, there are two main parts that must be done. The first part is setting up a static IP address on the Xbox 360, and the second is setting up the port forwarding on the router.
NOTE: By enabling a static IP address on your Xbox 360, you may run in to connectivity issues when attempting to connect to the internet at different locations. If you do run in to connectivity issues at other locations, you must turn off the static IP.

Part 1. Setting up a static IP on your Xbox 360
  1. To start, we will need to turn on the Xbox. Then go to the Settings heading. From here you will need to move down and press A on System.
  2. Next, choose Network Settings. Then you will want to select Wired Network.
NOTE: The next steps are for the Wired Network settings. If you are connecting to a wireless network, then select Wireless Network instead. The steps for assigning a static IP for a wireless network should be somewhat similar.

  3. Next, we will want to select Configure Network and press A. Here we want to select IP Settings by pressing A again. Then, we will want to select Manual to begin assigning a static IP.
  4. Here you will need to fill out the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway information. Once all three settings have been entered, select Done and press A.
NOTE: These settings may vary depending on the brand of your router, but the following settings are the default for both Comtrend and Linksys brands.
    • IP Address: 192.168.1.115
    • Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    • Gateway: 192.168.1.1

  5. Next we will want to select and change the DNS Settings to Manual as well. Depending on your ISP, these number will vary, but Nex-Tech's are:
    • Primary DNS Server: 24.225.5.2
    • Secondary DNS Server: 24.225.0.1

Once these addresses are entered, select Done and press A.

  6. Now we have successfully assigned a static IP address to your Xbox 360. Next we will need to set up the port forwarding inside your router. Please follow the steps below to configure your router.

Thanks to the faintly odd generosity of a colleague—I won’t name names, but let’s just say the URL of the gentleman in question rhymes with “fairgag”—I find myself with a yearlong XBox Live subscription. One interesting wrinkle in this scenario is that I don’t really have any multiplayer games besides Halo 2, but that isn’t really the biggest issue. No, the real problem is that the XBox 360 is two floors away from the DSL router, with no possible cable routes that don’t involve winding about a hundred feet of CAT-5 around stairwell bannisters and across public walls.

Now, I do have 802.11b wifi in the house, so I could buy the official wifi adapter. What I’m wondering, though, is if I could plug the XBox into my Airport Express‘ Ethernet port (or the USB port) and get it onto the network that way. I Googled a bit but didn’t turn up anything relevant, and poking around the administration utility’s configuration pages didn’t seem to help. Anyone know if there’s a way to make this happen?

Of course, I have no idea if my Netgear MR814v2 router is even XBox Live compatible, but one thing at a time, I guess.
